Raising deer, elk

University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital veterinarian Dr. Clifford Shipley gets a personal greeting from one of his elk cows while feeding another in their one-acre fenced enclosure at Cervids Farm that he owns in rural St. Joseph, Ill. Shipley is one of about 400 deer farmers in Illinois. He raises elk, mule deer and white tail deer to be sold for meat, breeding stock for hunting ranches, and urine for hunters who use it to attract deer in the wild.
